Trinity City Arts Launches Next Artivism Project: Water Wonderful World

Writer: Isabelle ChirlsIsabelle Chirls

Read all about our latest artivism project, an original coloring book featuring a partnership between our youth artists and local climate experts!

WATER WONDERFUL WORLD, a new coloring book about water in New Orleans for kids in grades K-3, is available now! Head to our website to download (free!).

This book helps kids track all the wonderful ways water is a part of their worldfrom brushing their teeth, to fishing in Lake Ponchartrain, to the beautiful wetlands that help us stay safe during hurricanes.

Conceived and written by hrilina♡, the Trinity City Arts Youth Outreach Organizer, this book features illustrations by three young artists: Lauryn Landers (NOCCA), Zion Mercadel (YAYA Arts Center), and London Salvant (Morris Jeff High), with graphic design by Mia Bailey. The entire team is between the ages of 16 and 22!

To begin, hrilina♡ met with local climate experts, including Sage Michael Pellet (Healthy Gulf), Raymond “Moose” Jackson, Claire Anderson (Ripple Effect), Aron Chang (Civic Studios) and Jacinta Gisclair (Levee and Flood Gate Engineer) to learn and discover the frame for the book.

Then, the youth artists met on zoom and in person to continue brainstorming and decide on the illustrations for the book. Thank you to our favorite small-and-mighty local print shop Paper Machine for providing space for our artists to meet, and for working with us on a print run of the book!

"Creating this book has been as educational for myself as I hope it will be for those who engage with it," hrilina♡ shared, whose roles on this project encompassed those of Author, Creative Director, Project Manager, Student, Educator, and Advisor of Artists. "It is such an honor to have been afforded this opportunity by Trinity City Arts, the City of New Orleans, and Bloomberg’s Youth Climate Action Fund – and trusted by everyone involved to make it happen. I’m grateful for this experience and excited for the book to be in the hands of educators and curious minds, alike!"

Thank you to the City of New Orleans and the Youth Climate Action Fund for supporting this project!
